Ben and Arlie will describe the work that Rare Cancers Australia does to address the unmet needs of people with rare and less common cancers and their families and carers. The session will explain what rare and less common cancer means and describe some of the particular challenges they present for patients and families. The session will detail the support services Rare Cancers Australia offers, including telehealth, peer groups and financial support. NB: Rare Cancers provides telehealth support to people in New Zealand.
Presenters:
Arlie is a Registered Nurse with over 15 years of experience in oncology, paediatrics, emergency, and neonatal care. She joined RCA in 2024 and continues to work casually in the Neonatal Unit at Wollongong Hospital. At RCA, Arlie combines clinical expertise with education and advocacy. She supports the Patient Support Team, provides up-to-date guidance, and conducts outreach across Australia to raise awareness and strengthen referrals for our nationwide telehealth support.
Ben has 25 years of experience in community engagement, health promotion and education roles in addition to earlier work in community development. His MA Hons research examined health education methodologies in youth drug and alcohol education contexts. Ben started with Rare Cancers Australia in 2025.
