Parenting with Cancer: an introduction to the Peter Mac Parent Matters service and an exploration of how we can support families during this time

The Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac) is a world leading cancer research, education and treatment centre and Australia’s only public health service solely dedicated to caring for people affected by cancer.  Peter Mac is located within the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC) in Melbourne and is the largest provider of care to individuals with cancer.

Presenters
Elena Schiena- Senior Social Worker

Elena Schiena has been a Clinical Social Worker at Peter Mac for the past 16 years, with previous service provision in Out of Home Care and Family services. Elena has a keen interest in working with families dealing with a cancer diagnosis to support and strengthen positive parent-child relationships during times of need and minimise adverse outcomes for children.  She has conducted needs assessment research into the needs of parents with cancer, the outcomes of which have been published.  Elena is a senior clinician in the parent support program at Peter Mac, supporting families experiencing parental cancer.

Christina Strouzas- Parent Support Social Worker

Christina Strouzas is a Clinical Social Worker in the Parent Matters program at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre (Peter Mac) and comes to Peter Mac from CanTeen (Australian Charity for Young People Living with Cancer) to support parents of adolescents 12 – 25y/age in their families. Christina has a keen interest in promoting positive parenting connections between parents and their young people as they move through their cancer diagnosis, treatment or end of life care.  She works to develop parental confidence in parent’s abilities to communicate with, support and foster strong connections and wellbeing with their young people and children to minimise adverse outcomes within families.  Christina comes to Peter Mac with a 10 year social work background which includes working with vulnerable families experiencing illness, grief and loss, mental health issues and much more through CanTeen, Child FIRST (now Orange Door), Lifeline and Wesley Mission’s Out of home care sector.
