Topic: Addressing Cancer Health Care Inequities for Māori with a Kaupapa Māori Approach
Inequities experienced by Māori patients and their whanau in Cancer health care were further exacerbated by Covid 19. Considered was that there would be a higher probability of missed appointments resulting in delayed cancer treatment, shortened life expectancy and decreased quality of life. In September 2021, a Kaupapa Māori, by Māori – for Māori, hospital and community-based initiative supported by Te Puriri O Te Ora – Regional Cancer & Blood Services, Te Toka Tumai – Auckland City Hospital was piloted within the Cancer Support service. The pilot project Awhinatia Te Tangata was purposed to improve attendance to First Specialist appointments and encourage engagement by improving the patient and whanau experience of Te Puriri O Te Ora. It is now an integral part of this directorates landscape.
This presentation introduces Awhinatia Te Tangata service as it’s a multi-disciplinary composition of Māori practitioners: Māori Nurse Specialists, Māori Radiation Therapists, Māori Health Psychologist, Kaumatua – Elder, Pou – Team Administrator, Pou – Clinical lead, Pou- Business Lead and Kaiurungi – iwi-based community workers.
Engagement with the patient and whanau is underpinned by key Te Ao Māori – Māori World values such as manaakitanga (generosity and support), mana and aroha (respect, love and compassion), whakawhanaungatanga (relationship building), and Tino rangatiratanga (self-determination). Patient case studies with relevant significant engagement points on the cancer treatment pathway, benefits and outcomes will be highlighted
